At Transcend, we can design and manufacture a range of different bespoke staircases to meet your needs whether it be for a commercial or residential property.
We will get many inquiries from the new customers , sometimes we need to ask few question for further talking,
We find that there is often a misunderstanding of spiral staircases and curved stairs.
similar features
Both types of stairs do share similar features, both of them being curved separates them for a traditional staircase .
More over, both of them can be extremely striking in appearance and sculptural in design.
It is common that any stair with a curve or winding steps are sometimes referred to as spiral. But mostly we will not recognize a spiral staircase as the curved or helical staircase, why?
——- bellow are some key differences to look for when identifying which is which.
main difference
—- No Central Column
The key difference between the two styles of stairs is to do with the central column, spiral staircases have a central column whereas helical staircases having treads supported to avoid in the middle-they don’t need central column.
Somehow, for some people, especially for who to want a completely bespoke design, the curved staircase is a better choice, since the helical staircase can be more modified in the shape.

Shape difference
Spiral Stairs form a complete circle which is the diameter of the staircase. This is generally between 1300-2000mm on domestic spirals and 2000mm + on commercial models. The depths of each step are uniform and equal and the handrail normally runs around the perimeter.
Helical Staircases, often form a continuous “C” shape with a larger, consistent radius. They can however be made to form an oval or elliptical shape configuration. A note about helical staircases is that they are also commonly known as curved staircases. The name helical originates from the staircase have the shape of a helix, which causes the main point of confusion where people believe spiral staircases to be the same.
Benefits difference & Functionality difference
Benefits of Helical Staircases
Helical staircases tend to require a large space and a sizeable opening in the floor to accommodate them but are often designed to be the feature point of the space.
Often, the structural steel for helical stairs are exposed and serve as a decorative element.
Commonly, the stairs are fabricated with two curved stringers with the treads attached between them. The lack of need for props or wall support allow the helix stairs to stand alone as a sculptural feature.
In our experience, helical staircases look best in open plan rooms especially entrances as it can give a modern or traditional property a grand opening. They also work great in a commercial setting whether it be a transition to a different shop floor or to a new floor of offices, a helical staircase can add an intriguing feature to impress customers. Checking the helical staircase in some brand clothes shop , you will find it give the shop an exclusive feel.
Helical stairs are ideal for office spaces, retail, showrooms, residences or other public spaces as they serve a bold statement with minimal spatial impact.
Benefits of Spiral Staircases
The main benefit of a spiral staircase is that compared to a helical staircase they has a lot more space effective. It is important to note that the more space you save generally will come with a bigger incline for the spiral staircase.
Spiral staircases have a strong aesthetic appeal often making them a popular choice with residential properties. They can also be used as an interior and external staircase.
One example of how a spiral staircase is used effectively externally is USA Matt private project where a spiral staircase was used to allow access from the balcony to the garden while not taking up space of the garden area.
Cost difference
Price is of course a big factor to consider and simply put, helical stairs are always going to be the more expensive option. Depending on the materials and size, a helical might be size times dearer than a spiral staircase. Without that central column to support the treads, construction methods and grade of material are higher dramatically altering the cost.
